Phra Buddha Sihing

According to legend, Phra Buddha Sihing was built by a Sri Lankan king and brought to Sukhothai by King Ramkhamhaeng the Great. After Sukhothai was under the influence of Ayutthaya, King Borommaracha I reinstated Phra Buddha Sihing in Ayutthaya.

Phra Buddha Sihing is another Buddha image much sought after by the rulers of principalities to grace their realms. According to historical records, Phra Buddha Sihing changed hands several times between Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai, depending on the circumstances and changing political fortunes of the city states. By the early Ratanakosin era when Chiang Mai was incorporated under the Bangkok dominion, Prince Maha Surasinghanat succeeded in enshrining Phra Buddha Sihing permanently in the Buddhaisawan Chapel in 1795.

After the death of Prince Maha Surasinghanat, King Phra Phutthayotfa re-enshrined Phra Buddha Sihing in the ubosot of the Temple of The Emerald Buddha. The image remained there until the reign of King Mongkut when the second King Phra Pinklao removed the image from the Grand Palace with the intention of enshrining it in the ubosot of Wat Bowonsathan Sutthawat inside his palace, which was being renovated at the time. However, the second king died before the intention was carried out and so Phra Buddha Sihing remained in the Buddhaisawan Chapel until today.

During the Songkran Festival each year, Phra Buddha Sihing will be carried in a procession and temporarily placed in Sanamluang to allow the public to sprinkle scented waters on the sacred image. The custom has remained a fixture to this day.

It is believed that the person who worship Phra Buddha Sihing will be prosperous and the purpose will be succeeded.

1. The consecration ceremony with Rian 1st batch Kruba Apiwat at Wiharn Laikham, Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai. (25 November B.E.2564).

2. The consecration ceremony at Wat ThungPong. (31 May B.E.2565).
According to legend, in 1407 when Phra Buddha Sihing was established in Chiang Rai, a war broke out between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, with Chiang Mai triumphing in the end. King Saenmuangma, ruler of Chiangmai, took Phra Buddha Sihing to Chiang Mai by transporting it down the Ping River.

The boat on which Phra Buddha Sihing was carried was moored for unloading at Wang Singkham Pier. While being borne on the pavilion chariot, the rays were seen to emanate from the body of the image traveling in the Northeastern direction as far as 4 kilometers. A monastery was therefore built on the spot and named Wat Faham (literally, Monastery of Brilliant Sky) in remembrance of the miracle.
At first, King Saenmuangma intended to enshrine Phra Buddha Sihing at Wat Suandok, which was located outside the city wall to the West. But when the chariot was hauled as far as Wat Lichiangphra, it got stuck and could not be moved any farther. King Saenmuangma considered this an omen and ordered a spired temple canopy built inside Wat Lichiangphra to house Phra Buddha Sihing.

Phra Buddha Sihing, now established at Wat Lichiangphra, inspired so much reverance and veneration among the people that the temple came to be named after the image itself. The sound 'Phra Buddha Sihing', however, was in time shortened into 'Phra Sing Luang', and the temple was so named till this day.
At the approach of each Songkran Festival, Phra Buddha Sihing will be carried on a chariot in a procession around the city of Chiang Mai for people to sprinkle scented water on the image for New Year blessings and auspiciousness every year.

It is believed that the person who owns this Phayant Phra Buddha Sihing (Phra Sing Luang) will be prosperous and the pupose will be succeeded. It is worshiped for protection from all dangers, good trade, popular with people. It is a great mercy, home protection and can be used in thousands of others purpose.

Phra Phuttha Sihing worship statue, 3-inches lap (Fumigated Brass Body), First Version, Wat Phra Phutthasihing, Na Yong District, Trang Province (B.E.2559).

It is related to the history of the white-blooded tiger queen of Phatthalung city that in B.E.2200, she traveled to bring Phra Phuttha Sihing from Sri Lanka through Trang and built a temple along Khlong Noi to enshrine the temple's name "Wat Phra Sri Sanphet Phutthasihing". This temple was built by the White Blood Queen, the wife of the former ruler of Phatthalung, which has appeared in the legend of Phatthalung province and many local tales in the south.

Being a woman with a pure heart and faith in Buddhism, she has built a large number of religious places, especially in the provinces where she leads the procession, including "Wat Phra Phutthasihing" in Trang Province. According to the shaft, legend has it that the White Blood Queen and her husband brought a Phuttha Sihing from Sri Lanka to the continent. But while traveling by boat, the boat accidentally collapsed at the estuary at Baan Phra Muang, Amphur Muang.

Set up in Trang Province, but Phra Phutthasihing did not sink. The Buddha image was floating on a single plank. Na Yong, Trang Province, until it got a good location, Phra Nang started building a temple and named it Wat Phra Sri Sanphet Phutthasihing or Wat Phra Phuttha Sihing. The aforementioned Buddha image was also placed at the temple in the Sukhothai period around 1900 or more than 650 years ago, this Buddha image is cast in bronze in the subduing Mara posture and has a 9-inch wide lap, cross-legged, diamond-shaped, and round face.

Phra Phuttha Sihing was lost around the year B.E.2526, although many parties have tried to trace it back. But it didn't work. All Trang people still have the hope that one day the real Buddha image will be discovered and brought back to be enshrined as the sacred object of their province again.
The old Phra Phuttha Sihing worship statue at Wat Phra Phuttha Sihing, Trang Province.

It is believed that the person who owns this Phra Phuttha Sihing will be prosperous and the purpose will be succeeded.

Phra Buddha Sihing has been Nakhon Si Thammarat's sacred image for a very long time. The people of the city believe that the image is the very Phra Buddha Sihing that was mentioned in the "Sihing Tales" since they included references to Nakhon Si Thammarat itself. According to the tales, King Ramkhamhaeng the Great heard of the miraculous qualities of Phra Buddha Sihing and therefore asked Phraya Nakhon Si Thammarat to send an emissary bearing the royal message to Sri Lanka to ask for the possession of Phra Buddha Sihing from the King of Lanka, who was glad to grant the wishes of the Siamese King. Phra Buddha Sihing was therefore brought to Siam at Nakhon Si Thammarat, a port city that maintained close relations with Lanka. According to legend, King Ramkhamhaeng came down to Nakhon Si Thammarat to receive Phra Buddha Sihing himself.

Phra Buddha Sihing is the supreme object of worship and reverence among the Southern people, particularly the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat. So the tradition goes, treacherous miscreants would never dare to swear before the image for fear of its terrible wrath. After the establishment of Phra Buddha Sihing in the Provincial Hall, the litigation statistics have ostensibly dropped sharply, as all litigants involved are often asked to swear on the name of Phra Buddha Sihing; hardly anyone dare give false facts.

During Songkran Festival, the people sprinkle scented water on Phra Buddha Sihing every year.

It is believed that the person who owns this Phra Puttha Sihing will be prosperous and the purpose will be succeeded.
